Dental crowns are used for many reasons but are typically used to protect a tooth which has become weakened. Crowns are natural in appearance and are crafted to match the shade and shape of your surrounding teeth. Those in the Surrey, British Columbia area seeking natural-looking dental crowns can visit our skilled dentists at Surrey Place Dental Group. Here are some common situations when a dental crown will become necessary.
A crown is commonly applied to a tooth due to advanced decay. While a smaller cavity will almost always be repairable via a dental filling (Our doctors generally use composite resin for fillings), a filling will not be adequate for a tooth with a large cavity or a badly decayed tooth. As the need for a larger filling becomes necessary, it can leave the tooth’s structure compromised. Because of this, a crown may be the recommended treatment. This is the same for when a large portion of the tooth has become decayed, and once decay is removed, the tooth is weakened due to how much of it has been removed. Once the decay has been removed, the tooth will be re-shaped, and a crown will be crafted to look like your natural tooth (in size, shape, and colour). This will then be placed over the tooth to protect it from further damage.
If you have received a filling that equals or exceeds 1/2 of your tooth, that is considered a large filling. If you have a large filling that has become damaged, failing or loosened, you should consider replacing it with a dental crown. A dental crown will provide superior protection to a tooth already weakened due to having so much of it removed due to decay. A crown will prevent the tooth from cracking, breaking, and more in the future.
A dental crown is an excellent option for protection and restoration if you have a tooth that has become cracked, chipped, or broken. While an issue such as a minor chip can sometimes be repaired with a cosmetic dental treatment, including a veneer or dental bonding, more significant tooth damage will require a dental crown. A dental crown will conceal the tooth, protecting it from further damage. This allows you to eat, drink, and smile again, knowing that your tooth is safe.
Within your tooth resides an inner chamber with a pulp consisting of blood vessels, nerves, and more. When this inner pulp becomes infected, it has to be treated. It is at this point that a root canal becomes necessary. When you get a root canal, a hole is created in your tooth, exposing the inner pulp. This infected tissue is removed, and the inside of the tooth is disinfected. The tooth is then sealed. This severely weakens the tooth, especially if the root canal was performed on one of your back teeth or molars. Once the root canal is completed, a crown will be placed to protect the weakened tooth. This will allow you to exert the necessary pressure to chew without worrying about the tooth breaking.
